Pictures

I guess I'm at that funny age. Follow me.

Ever since my parents decided to move from the Cape back to Ct. it seems that I have been sorting through "memorabilia". First it was stuff AT their house. Next it was stuff that I moved from their house to MY house. Then it was stuff that moved from the Cape to Ct. and now had to move again once Mom and Dad passed away. Now it's stuff that I have been packing and moving from one apartment/house to another. Lots of these items are pictures and/or slides.

On occasion I will start looking for something and come across a box or an envelope with old pictures. What I've started to do is Save!, Share! or Destroy!.

The Save! pictures are ones that I feel should be passed down to family members. I've even tried to identify some of the people in the pictures. They are going to my nieces and nephew or my cousin's kids.

The Destroy! pictures are immediately sent to the circular file. Bad shot, unknown people, duplicate, whatever. It's not worth trying to figure it out and why I've kept it this long I will NEVER know.

Now, on to the Share! group. These are pictures that were taken during birthday parties, graduations, weddings, and have people that I haven't seen in years or who I grew up with and hear from at Christmas. So, I've started sending these pix to them. They can share them with their families. I lighten my load and they get a good chuckle!

Unfortunately, I'm beginning to find out that these friends are doing the SAME thing. Yesterday, I got an envelope from a gal I grew up with and it has about 5 slides of me at my grammar school graduation. Lord help me! That's ok - I'm going to her 60th birthday party next month and I'll have some great pictures of her to share!

Whispering

Whispering is RUDE!

If two adults are having a conversation with others around and feel the need to whisper, then they should move to somewhere else so that no one can hear them. There seems to be quite a bit of this going on lately and I find it rude and childish - but not unexpected by some of the people who are doing it.

I think they think that it makes them seem important. I also don't think they realize how rude and uncouth it is.

Sometimes they'll come to me and whisper a perfectly normal question, and my immediate response is to ask them why they are whispering - in a normal voice! It throws them off guard. Of course, any type of manners throw these people off. These are the same people who chew with their mouths open, during meetings, and grunt like they understand what's going on.

It just really irks me! Some people just don't have any manners.

Kudos to the Container Store

I just got back from shopping and lunch with a friend. After going to the annual Craft Fair, we had lunch and then went to the Container Store. If you don't have one in your neighborhood and/or have never been to one, it's an organizer's delight. They have a container for everything.

Now, I will grant you, they are not the cheapest place to shop and I know that you can get a lot of their items - or reasonable facsimiles thereof - at other stores - but they are a great place to get some good ideas. And, in some cases, they're the only kid on the block. They carry archival boxes and paper and that's what I was looking for.

And, as is the case in most shopping excursions, I can rarely leave a store with only the one item that I went in for. Thus was the case today. I also came out with an accordion file folder that was on sale and a "miracle cloth" that will clean windows and mirrors with or without water.

And, as is the case in most stores, there are labels on many items as well as price stickers. But, much to my surprise, the labels and stickers put on by the container store on their products came off with one quick pull. NO fighting with gummed stickers that were put on with the hopes of outlasting the ozone layer as we know it. I simply lifted one corner, gently pulled, and off they came.

Thank you Container Store! You have saved my purchases from scratches and my new manicure from being ruined!

Three Years!

It does not seem possible that three years ago today I was in Lahey Clinic getting a new (to me) working kidney - - - Lefty, as it's affectionately been dubbed. It seems to be working well and doing all the things that a good kidney is supposed to do.

I go to the xplant clinic every 6 months and in the alternating 6 months I go visit my nephrologist.

In the meantime we have finally figured out an anti-rejection drug combination that seems to work. Their only side effect is weight gain! I am off all antibiotics - except for pre-dental work. I'm on 5K IU/day of Vitamin D and, therefore, am no longer on high blood pressure medication. What a relief to have Charismatic Chris take my bp during my checkup and have him proclaim, "sounds good!".

But the best news and event in the past 3 years is the birth of Rebecca Elizabeth Bellinger to my niece/god-daughter AND DONOR!!!!! She is such a joy and a delight to everyone.

So, today I am celebrating a healthy kidney and a beautiful niece.

Take An Aspirin & Soak It!

Dear Mom,

I can't believe that it's been 4 years since you left us.

I still miss you. I miss hearing, "Behave yourself!" whenever you said goodbye to me.

I miss you asking me what I want for supper as I'm taking the second bite of my breakfast.

I miss hearing, "Oh, Sher!" as I've just called UCONN's opposing basketball team %?!#&!?^% for the twentieth time.

I miss you pretending to be so tortured when Susie and I would get together and pick on you unmercifully.

I miss hearing you say, "I love you," whenever we were on the phone.

I guess you're never to old to miss your mom. I know I'll never be too old for that.

Love,
Sher

Please Explain

About 2 weeks ago we had one of those typical early March days in New England. We hadn't had a snowfall in a while and most of the snow that we had was almost melted - except for the huge piles in parking lots. The weather was balmy - in the 50s.

However, what was added to that mix was the wind. They were reporting gusts of up to 40 mph. If it wasn't nailed down, it was blowing around. Sand and leaves were swirling and occasionally I'd see a deck chair that hadn't been put away, bobbing around someone's yard. It was a "hold-on-to-your-hat" kind of day. In fact, it was best NOT to even wear a hat. Chicago would have been jealous.

So the scene is set - it's WINDY. I'm driving home from work on my usual route and I drive by an assisted living home. It's not unusual to see a few men or women outside enjoying some fresh air. But, what do I see while driving by that day, but a lawn maintenance guy out in the front yard of his place attempting to use a leaf blower! Yes, he was valiantly trying to blow the leaves - somewhere.

I almost ran off the road.

Quiet

Let me preface this blog with - I'M SICK AND TIRED OF SNOW!

Now then, one of the nicest things about a new snow fall is the silence; the quiet; the muffling of noise. Maybe it's because there's less traffic. Maybe it's because the snow acts as insulation. Whatever, it is always so quiet and peaceful while the snow is falling Even the trains behind the house aren't as noisy.

I'm enjoying it while it lasts.

Geography Lesson

Let's start with a very simple geography lesson.

The six New England states are Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, & Rhode Island. New England is located in the northeast corner of the United States. For those who don't know, it gets very cold here in the winter and unless Mother Nature really screws up, it snows here as well. Usually a lot between November and March. Sometimes earlier, sometimes later, but here in Massachusetts we can count on several good sized storms during the winter months. Winter months here in the northern hemisphere are between November and March. Just want to make things clear for the uninitiated.

So will someone please explain to me why, with a major storm perched on our doorstep on March 1 are the town mayors/managers/selectmen surprised? They've run out of money for snowplowing, sanding and salting. Yoo-hoo! It's New England. They didn't budget enough. You wouldn't mind it, but this seems to be a yearly occurance. Can't they ever over budget and then celebrate when they have money left over? They all get on camera with this innocent look and feign surprise when we have a snow storm in March. If they were the mayor of Dallas or Memphis or Huntsville, I could see their surprise and outrage. But, it's freaking Massachusetts! &*^%?!*& happens!

Will someone please tell these folks that it snows in New England in the winter.
